A Brief Foreword
Since moving to California in 2021, I have developed a few brief and casual analyses of moments in Beethoven’s music. Many of these have been shared with colleagues and students over the years, though I rarely formalized them in writing. For some, I have not yet come across any published work that puts forth the claims I make. Still, the vein of exegesis that interests me does not seem to neatly fit within current trends in academic musicology or music theory. Rather than bending my thought to fit a square peg in a round hole, I am planning to self publish my ideas here on my long-inactive blog. These will come out as serialized installments of what I’m calling Beethoven Glosses. Though he has long been an important composer to me, it is not my intent with these analyses to raise anyone’s evaluation of Beethoven. My hope is simply to offer meaningful new ways of experiencing the music and to share the inspiration I have found in it.
If you happen to know of a source that makes similar claims to mine, let me know — it would be interesting that we have independently reached the same conclusions.
